25-percent of Oregon students miss school. A recent Attendance Works study showed that a shocking 130,000 of those students were kindergartners.
Here in the Oregon the numbers are very similar, but unlike other states educators in Oregon are faced with a roadblock. Under current law, students under the age of 7 are not required to attend class.
That's why some schools have started implementing new reward programs for attendance.

The cause of absences is very simple. The State of Oregon mandates that student be present a certain percent of days. When children are absent the school is required to send home threatening letters to the parents, which cause many parents to send the kids to school when the are really sick, which spreads the sickness to the whole school. The law needs to be changed and parents encouraged to keep children who are sick, at home.
