Current Ashland Councilwoman Carol Voisin is running for a second term.
"The council needs to change, that's for sure...I think it's dysfunctional," said Voisin.
Confusion and bickering has become a norm when it comes to Ashland City Council sessions.
"There's been a lot of contention [...] sometimes the debate spills over a bit," said Ashland City Councilor Russ Silbiger as he acknowledged points of heated bickering. He said this year he's opting out and not seeking re-election.
"I think 8 years is long enough," began Silbiger.
"I will be thankful to not have to be there," he later said.
However, opting in to the race, former mayor Alan DeBoer has announced he'll be going for the Mayor's seat.
"I run a good meeting," he said when asked how he would preside over the city council meetings.
But the confusion at council meetings aren't his main concern.
"I just think we need to bring some common sense back into government," said DeBoer.
Two big issues on his plate: making sure Ashland has direct access to Talent's water supply in case it's needed and strongly opposing the idea of cutting down lanes of traffic on North Main.
"I'm just really concerned that the North Main project is just a disaster waiting to happen," said DeBoer.
Meantime, Keith Haxton will try to take Councilman Greg Lemhouse's seat, and Regina Ayars hopes to fill Councilman Russ Silbiger's vacant spot.
Ashland's election is bound to be a contentious one. The pool of candidates could grow even more as the August 23rd deadline to file paperwork approaches.
