Buying Semi-Automatic Weapons

All of the events from Tuesday's Portland mall shooting have again brought the discussion of gun violence and gun control front and center yet again.  Tonight we ask the question why are these assault rifles on the streets and how easy are they to get?

The weapon of choice for suspected Portland mall shooter, Jacob Tyler Roberts, was an AR-15, a highly accurate, semi-automatic weapon, a similar version of which is even being used by the military in Afghanistan.  But what practical purpose does it serve in suburbia?  NBC5's Laura  Cavanaugh went to the experts to find out.

As a former Spanish teacher, Laura believes in community service. In her free time, she spends her weekends volunteering and fundraising for organizations that benefit children, animals and people in need. Those organizations include CASA, S.M.A.R.T., Women's Crisis Support Team, Southern Oregon Latina Scholarship Fund and Dogs for the Deaf.

Laura enjoys salsa dancing, reading, good music, working out and college sports. She also loves to spend time with her miniature dachshund.
