A group of local farmers is trying to convince the Jackson County board of commissioners to ban the planting of genetically engineered plants in Jackson County.
According to the group " GMO-free Jackson County", crops that are genetically altered can cross pollinate with organic ones and can corrupt the crop.
Syngenta, a corporation that produces genetically modified produce is doing so in Ashland, Medford, and Grants Pass.
They're going growing genetically engineered roundup ready sugar beats in this case. And those seed crops will contaminate anyone else from city gardens to school gardens," says Chris Hardy.
The group leading the charge for a GMO free Jackson County plans to meet again on Monday at 9am at the Ashland library.
