A grass fire filled the air with smoke earlier this afternoon. The Oregon Department of Forestry says a grass fire is burning in the hills above Phoenix near Anderson Butte Road and Griffin Creek Road. That's on ODF protected land.
Officials say that the fire grew to around five acres, but was quickly contained. Our photographer, Jacob Dean, was first on scene. He grabbed these images.
"We had a small roadside fire that got up into the grass and timber and took off for a little while. We got several engine crews on scene, a hand crew and a couple of dozers. we do not know how it started yet." said Chris Wolfard of the Applegate Valley Fire District.
Crews will be working through the night looking for hot spots and keeping the fire under control.
