Random Stabbing Arrest

A Jackson County grand jury hearing disturbing testimony Wednesday about a random attack on a Medford man who nearly died.
    A 26-year old man stabbed in the back for no apparent reason... police officers are perplexed.   
    "Random attacks are relatively rare, especially attacks of this seriousness."
    The attack occurred here, in the area of Wabash and Stevens, a residential neighborhood in East Medford. The victim says he was minding his own business and exchanged no words with his attackers.
    "These particular folks for whatever reason decided they were going to assault the next person they saw."
    Medford PD arrested Daisy Cabrera and Christopher Gress for Assault-3, but Jose Manuel Ayala, the man they believed stabbed the victim got away... that is until yesterday when MPD caught up to him at a home in Trail, Oregon.
    "I can tell you that there was a person that had been made aware of this, that Ayala could be responsible for it, and she called down to the Medford Police Department."
   Ayala is in Jackson County Jail, charged with assault in the 2nd and 3rd degree.
   Meanwhile one of his accomplices Daisy Cabrera is no stranger to random attacks... just one month after the stabbing occurred... Cabrera and 2 other friends were arrested in the same East Medford area.
    "They had assaulted this 55 year old for no reason... patrol caught them. Patrol caught them and arrested them for assault 3."
   While charges are pending against Ayala, Cabrera and Gress... MPD detectives worry about random crimes like this, because they're so difficult to prevent.
     If Ayala is found guilty of Assault-2 he will face a mandatory sentence of 70 months for the Measure-11 crime.
