A new pilot program to use smartphones to tax drivers on the miles they drive is up for discussion.
Due to hybrid cars, Oregon's gas tax isn't bringing in the funds like it used to and the Oregon Department of Transportation is looking to technology.
Drivers would be taxed based on the miles recorded with the new app.
O-DOT will present the idea in a public meeting next Tuesday, at the O-DOT White City office.

For every solution found for our nations problems, other problems arise. We should just go back to horse and buggies. The planet has been here for thousands of years and we have managed to and continue to destroy it with technology in 120 years. What does that say about the greed of the human race?
Pretty soon we'll be taxed for wiping with our butts
no no no, sounds like the O-DOT must go round up some signatures to maybe get their idea put on a ballot. I don't see people going for that cause for 1 thing not everyone owns a smartphone not to mention the fact I can honestly say that 3 out of 10 people I meet dont even care for the smartphones. I understand the need for revenue I also understand O-DOT's claim that they are losing revenue due to these new hybrid cars. maybe pass a law mandating a special docking station to recharge your hybrid must have a one of a kind plug that only excepts the hybrid cords or however they charge them and find a reasonable tax to attach to the machine base on hours of charge.
Okay... There's something wrong with this picture. Why would they want to tax us for the miles we drive, when we're already suffering the prices of the pump and paying higher insurance premiums? Are these people not aware that there may be some of us who are struggling to pay the bills and keep food on the table, and a roof over our heads? Or is this just a push from the higher ups to go ahead with their carbon tax agenda? There's already talks looming from The Hill that Tim Geitner is willing to take us all over the fiscal cliff. Tied together with this and the state of our local economy, how do they really expect us to pay a tax for the miles we drive? And why are these people so concerned over documenting every mile we drive, unless it's to track our every move? It's already been admitted on the news that GPS tracking devices are implanted in every smartphone and a wide variety of cell phones around the country. This means that they know where you are at all times, they know how far you go at any given geographical location, so of course they're using this new tax as a cover for their continued, unconstitutional mass surveillance on the American People. If anybody's awake to this, please get the word out to fight this corporate greed!!!!
