k9 barryMedford, Ore. — Officers made an arrest last Thursday night thanks to an alert citizen, and a police K9.

According to Medford Police, a citizen witnessed people checking car doors in the area of Delta Waters Road and Tahitian Avenue in Medford. When officers arrived, they found 29-year-old Justin Mathewson and a woman who matched the description provided by the witness.

Police say Mathewson ran when approached by officers. He was caught once, but fought off the officer, even after being tased. Mathewson fled once more and police lost sight of him.

MPD says that a police K9 named Barry assisted in the pursuit of Mathewson, and quickly tracked him down, finding him hiding in someone’s yard on Tahitian Avenue. Mathewson was arrested and is now in the Jackson County Jail on multiple charges. The woman was not charged.

Officers add that they discovered a stolen car in the area of the arrest that had been reported stolen two days earlier. They also found a meth pipe in the vehicle.
