Illegally harvested mushrooms seized near Crater Lake

mushroomsCrater Lake Nat’l Park, Ore. — More than 230 pounds of illegally harvested mushrooms were seized at Crater Lake.

The National Park Service said the morel mushrooms, worth about $8,000, were taken from the park over the 4th of July weekend.

Mushroom hunting is not allowed in national parks, and can result in a $5,000 fine and a maximum 6 months in jail.

14 people received citations for the crime. According to the U.S. Forest Service, individuals can harvest up to a gallon of morel mushrooms in Oregon without a permit.
