Oregon State Police investigate Cave Junction shooting

Cave Junction, Ore. — Oregon State Police are investigating a shooting in Josephine County that sent a man to the hospital. It happened around 10:30 Tuesday night on the 8000 block of Holland Loop Road.

Patrol Lieutenant Jeff Fitzgerald wouldn’t say what led up to the shooting or how many shots were fired, but neighbors said they heard five or six shots. Fitzgerald also wouldn’t say if a gunman is on the loose, but that they don’t have anyone in custody.

“Because it’s an ongoing investigation we’re not releasing much information right now to protect the integrity of the investigation,” he said.

Fitzgerald said they don’t believe there is any immediate danger to the public.

Jane Mellard has lived on Holland Loop Road for eight years. She said she’s used to hearing gunshots since people shoot for recreation in the area often. But she didn’t expect to wake up to a crime scene.

“I’m a little nervous and shaken up,” she said. “I thought with the flashing lights there was a bad accident down the road or a power line down somewhere they didn’t want people to go through.”

The victim was taken to Three Rivers Medical Center in Grants Pass. His injuries are not life threatening.
