Portland, Ore. — The Portland Public School superintendent is retiring earlier than planned.
Portland NBC affiliate KGW reports Carole Smith will retire in October instead of at the end of the upcoming school year. A national search is now underway.
Smith’s resignation comes the same day as an independent investigation found multiple reasons the district failed to provide clean drinking water to its students.
Elevated lead levels were found recently at several district schools. Unclear policies, misleading and inaccurate communication, and lack of funds are all said to have contributed to the problem.
