Firefighters say Monday’s Turtle Lane Fire shows the importance of defensible space.

Grants Pass, Ore. – The Oregon Department of Forestry is using a recent fire that burned south of Grants Pass to emphasize the importance of “defensible space”.

Monday afternoon’s fire on Turtle Lane destroyed a car and outbuilding, but firefighters said defensible space allowed the home to be saved.

ODF describes defensible space a buffer between buildings and the grass, trees, shrubs, or wildland that surround it. The space can slow or even stop the spread of wildfire and protect your home from catching fire.

Firefighters said if you want to learn more about protecting your home through creating defensible space, you can call 541-664-3328. Ask for the Stewardship Forester or Firewise Coordinator. You can also visit the Firewise website by clicking here.
