Man arrested after forcing his way into apartment

JONVANI SANCHEZ-PORTILLO PICMedford, Ore. — A man is in jail, after Medford Police said he forced a woman to let him into her apartment so he could hide from officers.

Police took Jovani Sanchez-Portillo, 30, into custody shortly before 3 PM on Monday. They said it started when an officer stopped Sanchez-Portillo for a traffic violation near Stevens and Royal.

After the car stopped, Sanchez-Portillo ran into a nearby apartment, where authorities say he grabbed a woman in the hallway, and forced her to unlock her apartment so he could hide. Once he was inside, the woman escaped, and ran for help.

“We came over here, found the apartment, and began addressing him, and he came out, cooperated, and was taken into custody,” Sergeant Jason Antley said.

As a precaution, Grace Christian School’s summer program was placed on a short lockdown, but it was quickly lifted after Sanchez-Portillo was taken into custody.

He’s being held on a warrant for unlawful use of a weapon and resisting arrest, but police said more charges related to this incident will likely be filed.
